What’s Happening? Spring 2023

We are very happy to be back to be offering in person activities. We are conducting tours daily and have completed our two in-person weekend courses on April 29th and 30th and May 13th and 14th. These ran smoothly, and we were able to have 56 students join us over both weekends.

We are happy to announce that the construction of our new HBRC is underway. The first stage was to clear some trees before the start of bird-nesting season. We will spend approximately $180,000 to plant pollinator friendly trees and shrubs in our “Bee Tree Forest.” These plants compensate 5:1 for the trees that were removed.  We are now in the last stages of gaining all the required building permits, with a plan to start excavation and construction this summer! Our groundbreaking ceremony was June 14th, 2023, and we moved our first research hive to the new site on June 21st, 2023.

This year we have students from all over the world joining us to assist us with our research. We have a new visiting PhD student, Muhammad, from the Czech-Republic. We also have a new student from Mexico, Darinka, who is completing her Veterinary Medicine internship with us. In addition to this, we have two students, Amy and Joelle from the UK to help us with our laboratory research. Our long-standing volunteer team have all returned for the summer to contribute to our success!
