Alvaro’s fascination with bees began at a young age, when he began assisting his father with beekeeping at the age of five. This led him to pursue a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, where, in the summer of 2011, he came to the HBRC to take part in a research project on the fungus, Nosema ceranae. Now, 13 years later, Alvaro is pursuing a Ph.D. at the University of Guelph! His current research is focused on Varroa destructor and exploring strategies for selecting bees with resistance to these mites, which are among the leading cause of colony losses across North America.
What Alvaro enjoys most about working at the HBRC is the people. “Everyone here loves what they do, which makes it easy to enjoy the work… the environment is really good!” Alvaro credits this to Paul’s approach of working with people’s strengths. His contributions to the team have been invaluable, as he eagerly shares his extensive knowledge and infuses the workplace with positivity. Thank you, Alvaro, for your continued dedication and hard work!
