What’s Happening | Spring 2024

The first sign of spring, here at the HBRC, is the start of our in-person weekend introductory beekeeping courses! The courses both ran well with full registration in each. Along with our weekend course, our tours have been back in full swing with multiple tours being held each week.

Spring also marks the start of the beekeeping season, meaning our centre is full and lively with activity again! Our regular team of volunteers have returned for the season, and we have many new student volunteers as well. In addition, we have two new interns from Mexico, Andrea Vargas Rosas and Miriam de la Torre Lovano, joining us.

Construction of our new site is well underway, and we are on track to gain access to the building in January 2025.

As of the date of publication, the windows are being installed, the interior framing is complete, the retaining walls for the loading dock have been constructed, and the parking area is up to grade.

There is considerable space around the facility that we will use for bee yards and trails. We have established a new teaching apiary near the back of the site, as well as isolated sites for research. Later, we will establish mating and research apiaries. This fall, as part of the site rehabilitation, we will be planting trees in the areas where we won’t be conducting beekeeping activities.
