Phil Johnson | Spring 2024

Al Adie at work supering and demonstrating wrapping hives for winter preparation.

Al (Alistair) Adie managed the hives and the field work for the Honey Bee Research Centre for 35 years. He had the job that Paul currently has. Al gave his grandson, Phil Johnson, two beehives when Phil was 8 years old. Phil went on to work in commercial queen rearing in California, Hawaii, and is now based in North Carolina. In memory of his grandpa Al, he donated $2,500 to name a colony in our new research apiary for his grandfather. Since we will be placing the hives in alphabetical order, we expect Al will be number 1. Thanks Phil!

The new facility would not become a reality if it weren’t for generous supporters like Phil. Over 300 individuals and companies have stepped up to support the project. Many naming opportunities are still available. If you’re interested in donating or naming a space, please contact Shannon Fawns, fawnss@uoguelph.ca
